Football

The West Varsity Football team came into 2025 with clear goals - win the city championship and make the playoffs. Mission accomplished!

Varsity showed their determination and poise under pressure all throughout the regular season. They started Week 1 by coming back from two scores down to beat Racine 19-18. Then after a tough loss to Brookside East, the team came roaring back with a decisive win over Madison East. Week 4, West came up just short on a 2-point conversion attempt with one minute left, resulting in a disappointing loss to Janesville Parker. However, it was a different story in Week 5 when the team beat cross town rivals, Vel Phillips Memorial, in a thrilling 28-20 overtime win. That drive carried over into the next game, with West defeating La Follete to win the city championship for the first time since 2017! Battling injuries, the team fell to Verona the following week but rebounded for an exciting Homecoming weekend victory over Janesville Craig. That win also secured West third place in the Big Eight! Finally, the team wrapped up the regular season by celebrating 26 seniors before the last game against Middleton. Going into the playoffs for the first time since 2019, the team faced the number one ranked team in the state, Muskego. While the Regents did not advance they played every minute of that game with the same determination and resilience they had shown all season.

The team’s performance this year was recognized by coaches across the city, conference and region. We are excited to honor the following athletes.

  • Captains: Ashton Mazvimavi and Jack McDonald

The football team motto is TOGETHER. We are one of the smaller football programs in the conference with about 80 athletes playing Varsity (5-4) and JV2 (4-4-1) this year. Many of our athletes played multiple positions on both offense and defense for both Varsity and JV2 this year. The athletes' commitment to each other shows up everyday on the fields and in the hallways during school. TOGETHER also applies to the coaches, families, teachers, administrators, sponsors, donors, and fans who support these young men as well. We are thankful to the West Booster for purchasing travel bags and capes this year. The team is incredibly proud of this season's successes and excited for what’s to come next year.

PROFILE | Head coach, Football

Mike Wolfgram

I started coaching at West in 2005 coaching 9th grade football and boys basketball. I’ve coached one or the other (or both) pretty much every year since. I did take a few years off when my wife and I started having our own children. I’ve coached at the JV2, JV and Varsity level in both sports.

I work for MMSD and am currently the Restorative Justice Coordinator at West.  This is my 3rd year working at West during the school day.  Previous to that I worked for almost 20 years in MMSD elementary schools, the vast majority of that time at Leopold Elementary.

I am a proud West alum (class of 1999).  I played football, basketball and track during my time as a student at West.

For undergrad I attended Beloit College. One of the reasons I chose Beloit was that they recruited me to play both football and basketball. I even competed in track my senior year just to get one more competitive team experience before I graduated.

I also have masters degrees in Curriculum and Instruction from Edgewood University and School Leadership from Harvard University.

I almost always leave practice more energized than I start practice. It is a highlight of my day to get to work with the student athletes in an environment they enjoy.

I try to be the coach I want my boys (ages 6, 8 and 11) to have, focused on growth and life skills more than wins and losses. I believe that on field success will be a natural by-product of creating a positive environment where student athletes are supported to be their best selves.

Two highlights for me this year were the overtime victory against Vel Phillips Memorial and the extra week together we earned by qualifying for the playoffs. The resilience our team showed against VPM was awesome. We didn’t play perfectly but we just kept competing and came out on top in the end. The extra week together for the playoffs was a highlight as well, even though the game did not go the way we wanted I will remember that experience positively.

Cheerleading Team

Our West High cheerleading quad is comprised of 15 members, led by coach Duncan Koepke and captains Quinlan Scheer & Raniah Rubaye.
